Introduction to Art and Design 1-year Course

A comprehensive 1-year multi-disciplinary course, which includes a wide range of different creative subjects, whilst also covering some basic design concepts.
Experience a variety of different art and design subjects; develop your existing creative skills further; and enjoy some time and space to explore your own personal artistic journey.
Whilst this is not an accredited or certifcated course, it will provide you with a comprehensive portfolio of work if you're looking to apply as a mature student, for a diploma or degree course (admission requirements will vary depending on the institution, so please do check specific course application details).
  • Duration of 1 academic year – 3 x terms of 10 weeks each                    
  • 6 separate subject units – a 5-week unit for each subject including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, glass and metalwork
  • Weekly Wednesday tutored workshops – 5 x all-day Wednesday classes per subject unit, from 10am – 3pm
  • Your own studio workspace at Artworks – weekdays during term-time you can come and work independently, at your own desk in a studio shared with the other students on your course
  • All materials for workshops included – all materials and equipment for Wednesday’s tutored workshops are included in your course fee; you provide any materials required for your own independent studio work
  • Limited to 5 students – the optimum group number for plenty of tutor guidance, whilst sharing experiences with fellow students
  • Fee: £2400 (4 x payments of £600) – a deposit of £600 payable on booking, plus 3 x termly instalments of £600
  • Starts September 2019 – ends July 2020 

UNIT 1: DRAWING - Working with materials such as charcoal, pastels and pencil and covering perspective, shading, observation

UNIT 2: PAINTING - Learning painting techniques including acrylics, oils and watercolours, on canvas and on paper

UNIT 3: METALWORK -Covering the basic principles of working with metal, and using copper and aluminium

UNIT 4: PRINTMAKING - Discovering lino or woodblock relief printing, also drypoint intaglio printmaking

UNIT 5: TEXTILES - Experimenting with decorative textiles techniques such as batik, silk painting, machine embroidery

UNIT 6: GLASSExploring both traditional stained-glass techniques, and contemporary fused glass processes
